West Silt Unveils Universal Toilet Rooms. The Gasket Is Still Sixty Bits.

Reed Hollow's plans put a friendship lesson over the sinks. The gasket form stays on the spike.

The folding chairs were still damp when Chair Vesper Quill turned the rendering around.

Somepony had set it on the easel that usually holds the spring recital list. Three stalls, a broom closet, and the faculty kettle-room were joined by a pale blue arrow into one room. Over the sinks, in letters larger than the sinks, the plan read UNIVERSAL TOILET ROOM. Under that, in the same ink: Lesson to be posted. The doors in the real hallway still said COLTS and FILLIES, in paint that had chipped down to the wood. On the rendering those two words were gone, and a single plaque covered both frames. The screws in the real doors were still the old screws.

The old wash room had leaked through the threshold during the roll. Harl Mince, who mops Reed Hollow School, had been told to stay for "community presence." He stood at the back with the bucket between his hooves and watched the arrow. The arrow pointed at a ribbon.

Quill said the West Silt School Board was proud to unveil the plans. The remarks were already printed, forty copies on the sign-in table, each one closing on the same line. A universal room, the page said, would teach every pupil that friendship begins before anypony chooses a door.

Nessa Bruck, the clerk who files facilities forms, had numbered the copies and the rendering. On the plumbing sheet behind the drawing, the line marked drain was blank. In the margin, in Quill's small neat hoof, were the words see lesson.

"One entrance, everypony, and the sorting ends at the sink," Quill said, one hoof on the ribbon. "That is the lesson. The lesson is what we are building."

A stallion in the second row asked where the pipe went. Quill said the pipe belonged to the bid phase. Nessa's stamp put the bid phase after the pamphlet run. The pamphlet was titled Enter Together. It showed the ribbon and a blank where the trap goes.

Harl knew the leak. He had filed a gasket request in late spring, when the threshold first went soft, and the request had stayed a request. The number on it was still the number he wrote.

The budget page listed the rest in a clerk's hand. Bronze letters for the new name, 12,400 bits. Pamphlet design, a reprint, and a rack to hold Enter Together beside the soap, 3,150 bits. A curriculum review of the sentence on the door, the same sentence as the remarks, 800 bits. A replacement gasket for the drain that was already there, 60 bits. Somepony had starred the gasket and written defer, pending universality.

The kettle stayed on the drawing, circled, with a note that faculty oats would continue during non-lesson hours. The broom closet became a privacy annex between breakfast and the last bell and remained a broom closet when Harl needed the mop. One latch. His key. The bow was stamped STAFF in old punch-letters. Nothing on the bronze order form had a box for that stamp.

"Hang the lesson on the door if the door needs something to say," Harl said. "Tuesday the drain still comes up. I can seat the gasket on a Thursday if the form gets off the spike."

Quill thanked him for his perspective. Perspectives, she said, were welcome on the comment card. The card asked for a name, a friendship-adjacent concern, and whether the commenter supported the lesson as written. The card had no line for a part number.

Nessa took the basket because the form says the clerk takes the basket.

"Forty remarks, one rendering, and Harl's work order from spring," she said. "The work order fits on the spike. The rendering goes on the kettle shelf until somepony draws the pipe. I left the line blank. Blank lines don't mop."

By nine the chairs were stacked on the dry side of the hall. The cream remarks had been carried into the kettle-room, out of the wet, and they sat under the oats shelf in a neat brick. Harl's gasket form was on Nessa's spike behind the file copy of that brick. The threshold was wet again before the easel was put away.

Nessa moved the gasket form to the front of the spike before she locked up. The rendering stayed with the oats, ribbon out.

Harl wrung the mop into the bucket, carried both past the doors that still said COLTS and FILLIES, and set them in the broom closet the plan had renamed a privacy annex. The latch took his key. Water stood in the rectangle the easel had left.
