Speckle Tally Clears Five Thousand. The Pamphlet Calls It a Reunion.

Ward Three pinned Friendship Report No. 418 over the morning chalk, and the mop pony kept counting.

By second bell the bucket had gone the color of the baseboard. Ember Flint worked Ward Three with the mop angled short, the way she did when the water was already doing more carrying than cleaning, and she did not step aside for the delegation. The delegation smelled like cold tea and fresh paper. The baseboard smelled like the morning.

On the linen shelf sat the slate. Ember had chalked the night figure herself, because the night clerk was in a cot with the same rash as the rest of the row, and she had mixed the chalk stiff so a passing mane would not wipe a digit. It read 5,014. Friendship Report No. 418, cream stock, Lesson Office seal, had been tacked over the lower half of the number before the council ponies reached the door. Two brass tacks. The last line of the report was set larger than the tally it hid. It said the speckle had returned so ponies might remember how to stand near one another.

The picture under that sentence showed three foals and one cup.

Ward notes from the Ponyville Market cluster, copied in Ember's square hoof on the form beneath the slate, described the same cup. A tasting row at a stall. Fourteen coats. Then the cousins. Then a bench at the rail stop. Nopony in the report had asked the ward for the notes. The illustration had been approved on Tuesday, two days before the cup turned up in the night log, and by the Lesson Office's reckoning it still counted as guidance.

Silver Hoof, who holds the health chair on Ponyville City Council and who had brought the tacks in a little tin, watched Ember wring the mop and spoke to the hallway rather than the row of cots.

"What we are looking at is contact," she said. "The old charts called it an ending. This chart is a reunion, if we are brave enough to read it."

The old chart, pinned in the stairwell where the pamphlet had not reached, was the Wide Needle year. Thirty-five winters back the ward had closed for speckle. The needle rounds had gone street by street, and the slate that year had ended in a single digit that stayed single. Council minutes from that winter, still in the box Ember's predecessor labeled DO NOT IMPROVE, called the close a supply fact. Minutes from this winter called it a story ponies had outgrown. A circuit talker at Ponyville Market sold coat-trust cards and told buyers the needle was a mood with a metal tip. The city printed a small leaflet agreeing that trust was a kind of care. The leaflet did not mention the second dose. It carried the same gold star now stamped on Report No. 418.

By the time the tally crossed five thousand, the star had been on the wall for nine days. Las Pegasus sent a notice that its visitor lanes remained bright and open, and asked the Lesson Office for a friendlier noun than outbreak. The office sent back reunion and invoiced the noun as a design.

Luna Starlight of the Lesson Office read the report aloud at the foot of the ward, including the sentence about standing near one another and a second sentence that explained the cup as a symbol of generous portions. A colt three cots down coughed on the word portions. Luna Starlight did not mark the page. She told the attending nurse the cough was participation, and that participation belonged in the appendix, where feelings went, rather than in the count, where feelings became alarms.

After the delegation left, the tacks stayed. Ember lifted the bottom corner, copied 5,014 onto Form 9-C in the box marked CONTRADICTION, and wrote the cup's stall number beside it so the next clerk would not have to trust the picture. She wiped the baseboard again. The spots on the paint came up. The chalk did not.

She signed the form with her full name, which the report had not used.

"They can call the cup a symbol after they wash it," Ember said. "The slate says five thousand and fourteen, and the fourteenth one is the cousin who only came for the sample."

The cousin was on cot four. By the time the mop water was dumped, Ember had chalked 5,019, and the new strokes ran past the edge of the cream stock, where the seal did not reach.
