Pell Painted Y.O.L.O. on the Final Front and Called It a Fight

Heat 19 leaves in sixteen days. Gold letters went on the poster cloud. The west lane got the wind.

Director Bram Pell booked the season's last scored front as Heat 19 and had the paint shop stencil four gold letters on the belly of Cloud 2 before the morning brief. The order, stamped 06:02, read "you only lift once." The shop shortened it. By 07:15 the letters Y.O.L.O. were on the poster cloud, periods included, paint still soft.

Heat 19 is the deciding card for the weather gavel. The cleared-lane majority holds the Canterlot Council 53 to 47. Pell's bloc needs four yards. His packet, handed out under the Wonderbolt press seal, lists eight yards "in reach" and calls the front the final fight. The front itself was posted for 02:10. It cleared the ridge at 05:46.

The slip is three hours and thirty-six minutes. Pell's 06:02 order moved the missed front onto Heat 19 so the log would show a start. The lane clock in the show shed was reset to 00:00. The working clock on the late-shift wall still read 05:46 when the posters came down from the loft.

Gale Report had the wind at 14 knots, bearing 290, gusting 19, filed at 04:40. The factory brief at 08:00 told the press the lane was a clean eight-knot push, with the director's cloud in front. Cloud 2 is the director's cloud. It is the only cloud on the poster.

Lark Mallow, on loan from the Wonderbolt press office to handle what the factory calls flight image, said the letters were a complete mark of intent. She said the smear in the first crosswind left the word intact. By the time Cloud 2 passed the tower the gold read YO O. Mallow said the office would hang a fresh belly panel. The panel is on order. The heat is in sixteen days.

Ida Venn has been crew chief on the late shift, 22:00 to 06:00, for nine seasons. She stayed on the yard through the 08:00 brief.

"Fourteen knots is not eight," Venn said. "A front that clears at 05:46 is a front that left the ridge at 05:46. They can zero the show clock. The ridge keeps its own time."

The signature card came down from Pell's office at 09:30. It asks each of the 47 to fly the director's cloud as the lead image through Heat 19. Venn put it on the nail by the kettle, where the yard hangs paper still waiting on a count.

Cade Morrow flies the west lane as reserve. He placed second in Heat 18 at 4:11.2. Torren Hale, the lead on the poster, placed sixth at 4:18.9 and left with a right-shoulder strain the press note called precautionary. Morrow tore his left wing strap on Tuesday's practice lift, logged the tear at 18:22, and finished the pattern with the strap buckled short. Hale stayed on the poster.

"I'm flying the west lane if they call it," Morrow said. "The strap is a shop job. They put the paint on the other cloud."

Morrow's yard is one of the four the gavel math needs. On Venn's sheet the yard is even. Hale's last full pattern was the sixth-place finish, and the 19-knot gust sits on Morrow's lane. Of the other seven yards in the packet, two have already posted. One held by six lengths with the home crew's first flier. One lost by a nose after the local chief sat the reserve and flew the pony from the picture. Venn wrote both lines in the margin. The packet had those lines blank.

Pell left the loft before questions. The office posted the line he gave the Monday meeting, that a schedule pony gets one last lift and ought to spend it, and then closed the board. Mallow called the posting a speech. The stencil order uses the same sentence, cut down to four letters and a rush fee.

Cloud 2 is set for an exhibition pass on opening morning if the new panel gets in. The exhibition is unscored. The west lane scores. Morrow sits on the operations slate at the 16th call, the slot the late shift uses for a flier in the race and off the poster.

The card was still on the nail at filing. Eleven of the 47 had signed.

Venn counted the signatures at filing and left the card where it was. Of the eleven names, nine were already on the poster. Morrow's name stayed off the card.

The rush fee on the gold stencil was 640 bits, charged to the flight-image account at 06:11. The west-lane strap repair sat on the shop board at 18 bits, unmarked for rush.
