CLOUDSDALE — Day 16 of Yardstill III stood at 349.6 million bits on the Hearthspool bulletin and at 41 paid on the reel barn sheet. The bulletin gave the crossing a time. The sheet gave it a count.
The Gale Report had moved a 30-knot squall across the west lane at 13:52, eleven minutes early. The 14:00 house and the 16:10 house were scratched. Crew chief Nessa Quill kept the 21:40. She has run the late shift at Reel Barn West for nine years. Her name is absent from the Yardstill III poster.
"We flew one house," Quill said. "Forty-one paid. Twelve of those came up for the prologue and went down before the titles. I wrote it the way the turnstile wrote it."
The prologue is a live pass through the cloud lane in front of the screen. Calder Voss is the stallion on the one-sheet. Reserve flier Sedge Harlan flew the pass, on a 19-minute call, in a coat cut to match the poster from the cheap seats. Harlan's name is on the injury card. He took a left-fore strain on the second banked turn and finished the pass at three-quarter power.
"They wanted the bank at full," Harlan said. "The wind was already wrong. I put it down where the lane was."
Factory director Pell Ambry stayed at Hearthspool. His press office came to the barn. At 16:40, the minute the scratched 16:10 would have let out, aide Ivo Trest posted a one-page notice calling the net "set to cross 350 million, and for practical purposes already across." The notice priced three additions: carriage holds from Yardstill and Yardstill II at 47.8 million, revalued to this year's list; 18,400 comps to the Wonderbolt press office and to clerks from the Canterlot Council at 500 bits each, 9.2 million; and a weather completion of 6.2 million for the houses the squall had taken off the board. The evening price on the barn door was 12 bits.
Trest read the notice to the two ponies still in the booth and to a photographer booked for the crossing. The photographer shot the empty bank of seats. Trest asked for a second frame with the seats cropped.
"The line is a schedule," Trest said. "A schedule is met when the office says the hour has come. The barn is welcome to its pencils."
Quill pinned the turnstile tape to the same board, under the notice. The tape runs nine hooves. Most of it is zeros from the scratched houses, then a short run of paid marks after 21:31.
Voss is playing the quiet sire for the third time, a stallion who keeps one story until the town repeats it. Hearthspool opened the picture on 1,160 cloud screens and 640 ground houses. Day 1 paid 41.8 million. Days 2 through 8 paid 138.2. Days 9 through 15 paid 96.6. Day 16 paid 9.8, nearly all of it in ground houses. Cloud screens spent six of the sixteen days under a front that sat on the range and took the matinees off the board.
Ambry's morning wire to exhibitors called the run a placing: "first across the line among third pictures this season." The wire named a margin of 0.4 million to the 350 mark. It asked houses to prop the doors for a victory loop. The loop has no flier assigned.
Harlan was offered the pass. The press office wanted him in Voss's coat, high, with 350 painted on the cloud under him. He declined. His strain is logged day-to-day. The office logged him unavailable and booked a smoke trail in the shape of a check mark for 18:00, weather permitting. The Gale Report has the lane shut until 20:10.
A statement from Voss came through the same desk as the bulletin. It thanked the public for "carrying the yard one more night." Quill read it once and went back to the tape.
Houses on the Arcane Express Sparks Rail took a steady 60 percent of seats through day 16. Cloudsdale's flagship, the house the bulletin treats as the race, ran the one late show. Ambry's wire folds both into a single net so the crossing can be announced from the barn with the photographer.
Windfall Margin, which books the gate for the late houses on its own card, posted at 22:16. The card showed the sixteen-day paid net, the comp line the press office had added, and the bonus clause in Voss's deal. The clause pays 40 million when a Hearthspool bulletin says 350.
Paid net on the Margin card was 286.4 million.
