Perrin Offers the Glass Expanse the Frame. The Frame Took the Wing.

Eleven miles to the cabin, an hour of light, and a chair the proving map will not print.

HARBIN TIMBER — Eleven miles to Nell Harbin's cabin, and an hour of light if the cloud on the second ridge held. The Gale Frame lay in the ravine where the proving cut tips into the creek. The vane stood open. Heat left the hinge in a thin shiver. Senn Carrow walked on his own hooves. Bramble Stitch had bound the left wing to a cedar shingle with fishing line. Harbin set the pace and named the miles when the footing asked.

Iron Press's noon sheet reached them at the third switchback, warm from a saddlebag. First Minister Dalla Perrin of the Low Cantons had told a courtyard she supported a chair for the Glass Expanse on the Shared Gale. Greyharbor keeps the drawings behind a locked yard gate. White Kiln has kept its export slate clear of them. Perrin said the Expanse had paid for Low Canton metal long enough to stand with the makers. She called the timber north of the cut an opportunity the Compact could no longer leave blank. Harbin read the sentence, folded the sheet over the splint with the ink facing in, and took the pace back.

The Shared Gale is the frame the three flags ordered to replace the cloud lances. Cold, it tracks. Copper Gauge timed the morning pass and logged the mark he logged in the spring: past that heat, the vane yaws for cover. His sheet stayed in the spring file. The courtyard packet carried a partnership. High Steward Lior Tess of the Glass Expanse stood at Perrin's shoulder until the sketch artists finished, then said his treasury would pay the months the purse had cut if the chair stamped the vane drawings.

Penny Ledger, who keeps the year-count, stated the columns and left the card in her satchel. The purse shut the year in its tenth month. The road line held at 4.1. Tess's sum sat against the frame. "Four-point-one stays in the road column," Ledger said. "The Expanse sum is in the frame column."

Before the hot run the Keel Office mailed the cabin a tin vane the size of a pie plate, four flags already painted, the fourth the pale cut-glass mark of the Expanse. The card was addressed to Resident, Opportunity Timber, and thanked the resident for hosting the future of shared flight. Harbin had set the plate on the bandage roll to keep the ridge wind off the cloth. The vane that flew was still in the ravine, two of Carrow's primaries pinched in the hinge. The hinge had quit the stick.

A blackcap marten has worked the cut since the first week of hot trials. It waits until shed plating cools from white to the color of a used pan, works a rivet loose, and carries it to a den in the root wall above the creek. Harbin has found three dens, each a stack of warm-worked metal. This afternoon it took a rivet from the Expanse crate marked for alliance trials. Lamp-dust blacked its mouth. It sneezed, glanced at the splint, and went into the roots with the rivet. The wing stayed tied.

"They drew a corridor over the creek and sold a map with the creek off it," Harbin said. "The yaw is a hot vane finding that water. I sent the turn in the spring. They filed the turn and sold the map."

Carrow drank without breaking stride. "I had the stick until the hinge went," he said. "Then the trees had it. She can keep the chair. I want the shingle tight and these eleven miles."

The bounty board at the village well had a new card in a clerk's round hand, offering share and sky to any company with a treasury seal. Captain Brightroute waited there with four ponies in matched scarves and clean fetlocks. He held out a release so the wing could go in his company book as southern-road experience, Perrin's courtyard line pinned above the signature line. Carrow walked past the pen. Brightroute told his four the blessing made the timber workable, and that a guide on the edge could be hired once the seat was formal.

Greyharbor sent nobody to the courtyard. A White Kiln clerk on the noon wire said the export slate was still a slate, and a speech had no heat in it worth a regulation. Neither office called the fourth flag back. The pie plate rode in Harbin's pack and held a bandage.

Six miles remained when the ridge cloud thickened and Harbin called the hour a guess. The Keel Office map in the well shelter still showed the cut as blank green, labeled opportunity. Perrin's line sat above the fold, under the splint. The road figure was still 4.1. In the root wall the new rivet was warm.
