Majority Revises Its Fall Outlook From Poor to Craptastic

Hall Records took the chair's word at 6:40. A noon seal asked that it be heard as harmony. The form stood.

The Office of the Hall Majority filed Form C-19 at 6:40 in the morning. The form is the fall seat outlook. Box 7 asks for the chair's own word. Tuesday's word was "poor." Friday's word was "craptastic."

Sterling Bramble signed it. He is Chair of the Hall Majority, Room 12, Common Hall. The ink is black. A coal stub in envelope D matches the draft on the blotter.

Dusty Verdict took the form at the records window. She is the filing clerk on the early desk. Her stamp reads received, 6:41. She initialed the hour, the box, and the word.

"The box asks for his word," Verdict said. "He wrote one. I file what the box gets."

The Tuesday sheet, still in the binder, put the majority at a loss of six to nine seats. The Common Hall has 100 seats. The majority holds 54. A loss of six leaves them short of the gavel. The Friday sheet left the number line blank. A clerk's note says the chair declined it. The note quotes him: "The number keeps moving. The word can sit."

Harlan Moss runs the numbers desk for the majority. He brought the backup sheet at 7:05. It showed eleven seats in the "leaning away" column and four more under "weather." On Moss's legend, weather means a district where the road floods and the older ponies stay home. He had circled two ditch towns and a quarry road. He stood at the window while Verdict checked the signature against the card.

"I had a range," Moss said. "The chair wanted the range in a drawer. The drawer is locked. The form is the public one."

Clover Margin was at the same window with a pink petitioner slip for the East Cut ditch. She had been there since 8:15. A runner set the outlook copy on her stack. She read Box 7. She handed the outlook back and kept the pink slip.

"I can read," Margin said. "My ditch is pending. Their seats carry that word. I still need a Thursday."

Verdict gave her Thursday, third bell, Room 4. The fee was the fee on the card. Margin paid it and took a receipt. The receipt says 8:22.

At 9:10 the phrasing office sent a glossary. The director is Glad Banner. The page defines "craptastic" as "a plain word for a hard map, used so the caucus can hear ordinary talk." Banner ran forty copies on a rush plate. The printer's ticket says the word exceeded the dignity type by four letters. The plate header reads "NONSTANDARD TERM. DO NOT CENTER." Banner asked records to clip the page to Form C-19 as Attachment G.

Verdict refused the clip at 9:18 on slip 7-B. Attachment rules allow tables, maps, and sworn ranges. "Attachment G returned. The word is already in the box."

Banner sent an amended Box 7 at 11:12. The amendment read "craptastic (technical)." Verdict rejected it under reason code R-4, "PARENTHESIS NOT A WORD." The code is printed on the back of the amendment pad.

The palace note arrived at noon from the Harmony Desk, under a small seal. The seal is the sun-in-wax, third size, the one used for courtesy readings. The note is four lines. It asks that the filed word "be heard as a vigorous term for a season that remains inside harmony." Spike, the records page, logged it at 12:06 and walked it to the window.

Verdict stamped the note received and pinned it behind the form.

"A seal can sit on a note," she said. "A new box takes a new filing from the chair."

Bramble held a stand-up in the corridor at 1:30. He read two sentences from a card. "The outlook is honest. Craptastic is how you say honest when the map is rude." He went back to Room 12. Banner gathered the glossaries still in the stack. Three stayed out. One was under the tea urn, blotting a ring.

Moss's backup sheet stayed in the drawer. At 3:40 a deputy from Room 12 asked for it on a white slip. Verdict said drawer requests go on a blue slip. The deputy left to get one. He had not come back by 4:10.

At 4:10 Verdict posted the ink copy on the corridor board. House rule puts the day's filed outlook beside the day's petitioner docket. The word sits in Box 7. Clover Margin's ditch sits three lines under it, Thursday, third bell, paid.
